Levetiracetam is an antiepileptic drug (AED) used primarily to treat seizures in people with epilepsy. Available in 250mg, 500mg, 750mg, and 1000mg doses, it is commonly prescribed to control partial seizures, generalized seizures, and myoclonic seizures. Levetiracetam works by stabilizing electrical activity in the brain, although the exact mechanism is not fully understood. It is usually taken orally in the form of tablets or oral solution, typically twice a day. Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, headache, and irritability. Serious side effects, though rare, can include mood changes, depression, or suicidal thoughts, so close monitoring is recommended. Levetiracetam is well-tolerated by many patients and does not require routine blood level monitoring. However, dosage adjustments may be necessary for individuals with renal impairment.
